The Environmental Programme (Phase II) seeks to improve environmental management in Myanmar. The objectives are improving water resources management, improving management of biodiversity and protected areas, and strengthening hazardous waste management. The Environmental Programme is a collaboration between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC) and Norwegian institutions. The Programme is financed by the Royal Norwegian embassy in Myanmar. There has since March 2021 been a freeze of programme activities.

The Programme includes four projects that will run during the period of 2019 – 2023:

Integrated Water Resources Management Institutional Building and Training II project (IWRM II), a collaboration between the Watershed Management Division Forest Department  (WMD-FD) and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)

Conservation of Biodiversity in Myanmar, including Strengthened Management of Protected Areas, a collaboration between the Nature and Wildlife Conservation Division Forest Department (NWCD-FD) and the Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA)

Management of hazardous waste, a collaboration between Department of Environmental Conservation Department and SINTEF

Capacity building on waste management in the Bago region, a collaboration between the Bago Region Government and NIVA

The Environmental Programme II is a continuation of the Programme’s first phase (2015- 2018). Based on effective achievements and the fruitful collaboration among the project partners, the Programme is financed for a second phase. NIVA is the coordinating partner of the Programme on the Norwegian side, and the Forest Department, MONREC is the coordinating partner on the Myanmar side.
