The current state of hazardous waste management in Myanmar is limited, leading to increased pollution and health problems. Significant improvements in hazardous waste management can be made through training and awareness raising programmes that promote segregation and reduction of bad practices.

Project objectives

  • Prioritise issues from the Hazardous Waste Master Plan
  • Improve quantification on Hazardous Waste generation in Myanmar
  • Initiate Co-processing in Myanmar’s cement industry
  • Build technical capability on handling and treatment of Hazardous Waste
  • Strengthen awareness and capacity on Environmental

In phase I, The Hazardous Waste Project prepared a draft regulation on transboundary movement of hazardous waste, a draft regulation on hazardous waste management; conducted first-generation inventory on hazardous waste and technical feasibility, prepared a Master Plan for hazardous waste management; and carried out capacity building activities for various stakeholders (Norwegian Environment Agency, SINTEF and the Environmental Conservation Department).

SINTEF will continue to work on this project with ECD into Phase II, focusing on capacity building and awareness raising, continued information gathering, sound treatment options, demonstration of integrated treatment options like cement kilns, conceptual studies etc. SINTEF will work on this project with ECD into Phase II, focusing on capacity building and awareness raising, continued information gathering, sound treatment options, demonstration of integrated treatment options like cement kilns, conceptual studies etc.
